What was NASA’s first achievement in the Space Race and why was it so important?

    The first achievement was sending the Explorer 1. This was important because it got the United States' foot in the door and actually got us somewhere within the space race. It caught us up to the Soviet Union, while achieving a purpose (EX: reading radiation levels)
